A routine veterinary appointment can change direction in seconds.
Your dog may still enjoy walks, finish every meal and sleep comfortably. Then the veterinarian listens to their chest and says, “I can hear a heart murmur.”
For many owners, the first search is simply heart murmur dog—followed by questions about grades, life expectancy, medication and Dog CoQ10 Supplements.
The most important fact is that a heart murmur is a sound, not a complete diagnosis. A dog can have a noticeable murmur without heart failure, while the loudness of the murmur alone cannot tell you exactly how well the heart is functioning.
Before choosing a supplement, it helps to understand what the sound may mean, which tests establish the stage of disease, and what Coenzyme Q10 can realistically contribute.
What Is a Heart Murmur in a Dog?
A heart murmur is an additional sound produced by turbulent blood flow. Instead of hearing only the normal heartbeat, a veterinarian may hear a whooshing sound through the stethoscope.
The sound may be associated with:
- A leaking heart valve
- Abnormal narrowing of blood flow
- A congenital heart defect
- Changes in blood viscosity, such as anaemia

Some puppy murmurs are temporary and disappear as the dog develops. In an older small-breed dog, however, a newly detected murmur is commonly associated with myxomatous mitral valve disease, or MMVD.
MMVD causes the mitral valve to thicken and become less effective at closing. Some blood then leaks backwards with each heartbeat, producing the murmur heard during examination.
A search for “heart murmur dog” may return frightening information about heart failure, but hearing a murmur does not automatically mean the dog is currently in heart failure.
Why a Dog Can Have a Heart Murmur but No Symptoms
Heart disease often develops before it produces visible changes at home.
Veterinary cardiologists use an established staging system for MMVD:
- Stage A: The dog is at higher risk because of breed or age but has no identified structural disease.
- Stage B1: Structural valve disease and a murmur are present, but the dog has no heart-failure symptoms and does not have enough heart enlargement to meet Stage B2 criteria.
- Stage B2: The dog remains outwardly asymptomatic, but imaging shows clinically significant heart enlargement.
- Stage C: The dog currently has, or has previously experienced, signs of congestive heart failure.
- Stage D: Heart failure is advanced and no longer responds adequately to standard treatment.
The distinction between B1 and B2 is particularly important. Both dogs may appear normal, but evidence-based treatment recommendations are different.
According to the ACVIM consensus guidelines for canine MMVD, Stage B2 is identified using a combination of findings that may include murmur intensity, chest radiographs and specific echocardiographic measurements. It cannot be determined from the murmur sound alone.
Murmur Grade and Disease Stage Are Not the Same Thing
Veterinarians generally grade a murmur from I to VI according to how loud it sounds.
- Grade I is very soft.
- Grades II and III become progressively easier to hear.
- Grades IV to VI are loud, with the highest grades producing a vibration that may be felt through the chest wall.
The grade describes sound intensity. The stage describes the clinical significance of the underlying heart disease.
These are related in some dogs, but they are not interchangeable. A loud murmur does not, by itself, prove that a dog is in heart failure. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that some small defects can create loud murmurs, while the significance of a murmur depends on its cause, location, timing and supporting diagnostic findings.
That is why “My dog has a Grade 3 murmur” is not enough information to determine prognosis or treatment.

The next step depends on the dog’s age, breed, murmur characteristics, symptoms and medical history.
A veterinarian may recommend:
A thorough physical examination
The veterinarian evaluates the murmur’s location, timing and intensity while also checking heart rhythm, pulse quality, breathing and other physical findings.
Chest radiographs
X-rays can help assess overall heart size and look for changes in the lungs that may be associated with congestive heart failure. They can also provide a baseline for future comparison.
Echocardiography
An ultrasound examination shows the heart valves, chambers and blood flow in real time. It is particularly useful for confirming MMVD and distinguishing Stage B1 from Stage B2.
Blood pressure, ECG or laboratory tests
These may be recommended depending on the dog’s rhythm, age, clinical signs and other health conditions.
The purpose is not simply to confirm that a murmur exists. It is to identify its cause and determine whether the heart has started to remodel or whether treatment is required.
Signs That Should Not Wait for the Next Routine Check-Up
An asymptomatic dog with a monitored murmur may remain active and comfortable for a considerable period. Nevertheless, owners should watch for changes such as:
- Faster breathing while resting or asleep
- Laboured breathing
- New or worsening cough
- Reduced stamina
- Reluctance to walk or play
- Restlessness at night
- Weakness, fainting or collapse
- Reduced appetite
- Abdominal swelling
- Unexplained weight loss
Breathing difficulty, collapse, blue or very pale gums, or severe weakness requires urgent veterinary care.
A supplement should never be used to “wait and see” when these signs are present.
What Is CoQ10 and Why Is It Discussed for Canine Heart Health?
Coenzyme Q10, usually called CoQ10, is a naturally occurring compound found within cells. It plays two relevant roles:
- It participates in mitochondrial energy production.
- It acts as an antioxidant within lipid-rich cell structures.
The heart has a constant demand for energy. Every contraction depends on cellular energy production, which explains why CoQ10 has attracted interest in cardiovascular nutrition.

The clearest proposed benefits are support for cellular energy metabolism and antioxidant defences. These mechanisms make CoQ10 relevant to heart muscle nutrition, but a plausible mechanism is not the same as proof that it changes the course of a disease.
What Does Research on CoQ10 in Dogs Actually Show?
Canine evidence remains limited.
A randomised, double-blinded study in dogs with MMVD and congestive heart failure found that oral supplementation could substantially raise plasma CoQ10 concentrations. Another study evaluated CoQ10 alongside standard cardiac therapy in dogs with MMVD, examining oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiac biomarkers, echocardiographic measurements and clinical status. A responsible summary is therefore:
- CoQ10 has a clear biological role in cellular energy production.
- Oral supplementation can increase circulating CoQ10 in dogs.
- It may provide antioxidant and nutritional support.
- Evidence does not show that it can remove a heart murmur or repair a leaking valve.
- It has not been proven to replace cardiac medication or extend survival in dogs with MMVD.
